Rhona Clarke
Rhona Clarke was born in Dublin. She studied at University College, Dublin and the Queen’s University, Belfast, where she was awarded the degree of PhD in composition in 1996. Rhona Clarke is a composer of a wide range of music including orchestral, instrumental, vocal and electro-acoustic. She has written many song settings in both Irish and English including a cycle to poems by W.B. Yeats as well as compositions for film. In response to her contemporary techniques and electronically modified sound use, she has received many awards such as the Varming Prize and the New Music for Sligo Composition Prize. She has received commissions from RTÉ, the Cork International Choral Festival, Music Network and the National Concert Hall, among others. Her work has been performed in several European music festivals including Donne in Musica in Italy (1999); Begegnungen in Austria (2000) and Neue Musik Winterthur in 2002/2003. Recent works include Where Clouds Go performed by the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra in April 05 and Tread Softly for piano solo, commissioned by the AXA International Piano Competition.
