Alfonso Monreal Lopez

Born in Zacatecas, Mexico, in 1953, he studied architecture at Guanajuato University before moving to the renowned 'Atelier 17' in Paris in 1976, where he worked with the renowned printmaker William Hayter. In 1978, he lectured in the Escuela de Artes y Oficios in Barcelona, and in 1981 he became director of restoration for the Musea Pedro Coronel in Zacatecas, Mexico where he also lectured in fine art. He moved to Ireland in 1982. He has held more than 30 solo exhibitions across Ireland, Europe, the U.S. and Mexico, and his work is held in private and public collections worldwide. He illustrated The Heart of Europe, a booklet written by several Belfast-based poets in response to the massacre at Srebrenica in 1995 during the war in Bosnia. He has received numerous awards, including the Goya Medal at the 10th Iberoamerican Biennial in 1996, and a visual arts award from the Arts Council in 1999.
