Born in Dublin in 1935, he is a self-taught painter. He lives and works in Ballyconnell, Sligo. He began exhibiting work regularly in the 1960s, in the Irish Exhibition of Living Art and the Oireachtas, and solo exhibitions at the Dawson Gallery, Dublin from 1965 until the death of Leo Smith in 1977. Major group exhibitions include Celtic Triangle (1971); The Delighted Eye, Earlham Street Gallery, London (1980); 14th Cagnes-Sur-Mer Painting Festival (1985); Contemporary Artists from Ireland, Austin Desmond Fine Art Gallery, London (1990); Painting Landscape, Fenderesky Gallery, Belfast (2001). In 1990, the Galway Arts Festival organised a retrospective exhibition of his work, which travelled to the Royal Hibernian Academy's Gallagher Gallery, Dublin and other venues in Ireland. In 1996, he had a two-person exhibition with sculptor Conor Fallon in the RHA Gallagher Gallery and the Model Arts and Niland Gallery, Sligo. He is represented by the Taylor Galleries, Dublin and has had regular solo exhibitions there since 1982, including works of the Sligo bogland and shoreline in 2002.
