Marie Hanlon was born in Kilkenny, she studied History of European Painting and English at University College Dublin and has worked as a professional artist since 1990. Known mainly as an abstract artist of finely made small and medium sized works, Hanlon’s output in recent years encompasses a broader range of media.
Through her collaboration with contemporary composers she has developed new work, especially in video and installation. Her incorporation of music is not merely to enhance the visual but to create a tense equal partnership in which both elements allow the other to be more fully realized. Hanlon has exhibited as a solo artist, in group shows and in screenings throughout Ireland and abroad. Venues include : Rua Red; Rubicon Gallery; RHA; IMMA; Visual, Carlow; Fenderseky Gallery, Belfast; Galerie Katharina Krohn, Basel; Jill George Gallery, London; Vancity Theatre, Vancouver; The Nerve Centre, Derry; IFI, Dublin. With The Rubicon Gallery she has been represented at art fairs in Brussels, Toronto, Miami, London and Dublin.
In 2014 she had solo exhibitions at Solstice Art Centre, Navan and Draiocht,Centre for the Arts, Blanchardstown, followed later in the year by a residency at AIR Krems, Austria. Collections include Goldman Sachs, Guinness & Mahon Bank, Colonia Insurance, Fingal Co. Council, Office of Public Works, Fidelity Investments USA & Ireland, Contemporary Arts Society of Ireland, Dublin Institute of Technology, Waterford Institute of Technology and private collections in Ireland, U.K. mainland Europe and the U.S.A. Marie Hanlon lives and works in Dublin and is represented by Rubicon Projects.
She was elected to Aosdána in March 2015
