Patrick Collins

Born in Co. Sligo, Patrick Collins studied briefly at the National College of Art and Design, Dublin. He lived in France from 1971-77, when he returned permanently to Ireland. His paintings have been exhibited widely in Ireland and in Europe, and are held in many public and private collections worldwide.

His solo exhibitions include Ritchie Hendriks Gallery, Dublin (1956-68); Mercury Gallery, London (1968); David Hendriks at Cork Arts Society (1973); Tom Caldwell Galleries, Belfast and Dublin (1971-79); Arts Councils of Ireland Retrospective in Belfast, Dublin and Cork (1982); Retrospective, Sligo (1985), Caldwell Galleries (1985, 86) and Tom Caldwell Gallery (1991). Group exhibitions include Living Art, Dublin (1950-72); RHA (from 1962); Oireachtas Exhibition (1964-73); ROSC ’71; Municipal Gallery, Dublin; The Irish Imagination, touring US (1972); From Yeats to Ballagh, Lund, Sweden (1972); The Delighted Eye, London and touring Ireland (1980).

He received numerous awards including the Guggenheim Award (1958), Oireachtas Landscape Prize (1971); Irish-American Cultural Institute Award (1976), the Arts Council/an Chomhairle Ealaíon bursary (1980); Oireachtas first prize (1985); the Douglas Hyde Award (1985); and D.Litt (hon.causa) TCD (1988). He was elected HRHA in 1980.
