Born in Ballaghadereen, Co. Roscommon, in 1941, he has worked in multimedia and film for more than 30 years, and pioneered the use of the "slide-tape" presentation format (multiple transparencies projected with synchronized audio tape). Recent solo exhibitions include Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris (1996); Wiener Secession, Vienna (1997); Fundacio Antoni Tapies, Barcelona (1999); Palais des Beaux-Arts, Brussels (1999); Galerie Rüdiger Schöttle, Munich (1999); Marian Goodman Galleries, Paris and New York (2000); Neues Kunstmuseum Luzern, Lucerne, Switzerland (2001); and Kunstbau Lenbachhaus, Munich (2002), Sprengel Museum, Hannover (2002); Musée du Louvre, Paris: Project for Léonard de Vinci dessins et manuscrits (2003); Museu do Chiado, Lisbon (2004-05). He has held international solo shows since 1970, across Italy, France, Germany, Holland, the U.S. and Canada. He won an Italian government student fellowship in 1967-68; the Irish-American Cultural Institute Award in 1977; and has received several Arts Council grants.
