Arthur Armstrong

Born in Co. Antrim, Arthur Armstrong lived in London for a time, and in Dublin from 1962. A member of the Royal Hibernian Academy (RHA), he exhibited widely in Europe and in the US. His paintings are held in private and public collections throughout the world.

His solo exhibitions took place in Gibraltar (1968); Galerie Avignon in Madrid (1974); David Hendriks Gallery in Dublin; Tom Caldwell Gallery in Dublin; Gallery 22; Arts Council of Northern Ireland: Retrospective 1950-80 (1981), and Kenny’s Gallery in Galway. Group exhibitions included the Kreisler Gallery in Madrid (1977), Leicester Gallery in London (1958), and Watergate Gallery in Washington (1972).

He received the Arts Council/an Chomhairle Ealaíon Travelling Scholarship in 1957 and 1968; the Douglas Hyde Gold Medal in 1968; the Gibraltar International Exhibition prize in 1967, and the Arts Council of Northern Ireland Art in Context prize in 1973.
