Frederick May
Born in Dublin, Frederick May studied at RIAM and RCM, London with Vaughan Williams and Gordon Jacob. A travelling scholarship enabled him to continue his studies with Egan Wallesz in Vienna. A talented pianist, he directed the orchestra at the Abbey Theatre in Dublin for 15 years.
He was well-known as a writer on musical matters and was one of the founders of the Music Association of Ireland. His main works include Scherzo for Orchestra (1933); String Quartet in C Minor (1936); Symphonic Ballad (1937); Spring Nocturne (1938); Suite of Irish Airs (1953); Sunlight and Shadow (1956); and Songs from Prison (1958).
