General Assembly

 

Each year, the membership of Aosdána meets in General Assembly, to elect new members, to agree matters of policy, finance and procedure, to undertake an analysis and review of the various activities of Aosdána, and to discuss issues relevant to the arts and artists in society. The proceedings of a General Assembly are covered by Standing Orders.

General Assembly 2018

This years General Assembly was held on 28th May in the Royal Hospital Kilmainham. At the meeting, members expressed their deep sadness at the deaths of former members Philip Casey, Stephen McKenna, Val Mulkearns, Richard Murphy, Tom Murphy (Saoi), Liam Ó Muirthile, Patrick Pye, Barbara Warren all of whom have died since the last assembly. A minute's silence was observed in their memory.

The artists elected at this meeting were visual artist Shane Cullen,  visual artist Rita Duffy, writer Mia Gallagher, visual artist Stephen Lawlor, writer Owen McCafferty, writer Mike McCormack, visual artist Isabel Nolan and writer Sean O’Reilly.

General Assembly 2017

Aosdána, the affiliation of creative artists in Ireland elected new members at its General Assembly on Monday 24th April at the Royal Hospital Kilmainham, bringing its total membership to 250. Those elected were visual artist Eddie Kennedy, visual artist Trish McAdam, writer Rosaleen McDonagh, writer Gerry Murphy, visual artist Niamh O’Malley, choreographer Fiona Quilligan and visual artist Anne Tallentire.


At the meeting, members expressed their deep sadness at the deaths of former members Leland Bardwell, Basil Blackshaw, Anthony Cronin (Saoi), Brian King, John Montague, Louis Stewart and William Trevor (Saoi) all of whom have died since the last assembly. A minute’s silence was observed in their memory.

General Assembly 2016

The 2016 General Assembly was held on April 27th. At the meeting, members expressed their deep sadness at the deaths of former members Brian Friel, Aidan Higgins and Theo McNab, all of whom have died since the last assembly. A minute's silence was observed in their memory.
Four new members were elected - Deirdre Kinahan (Literature), Little John Nee (Literature), Colman Pearce (Music) and Bill Whelan (Music)

The General Assembly offers members an opportunity to discuss and explore issues of importance to the arts and artists in Ireland. Presentations by Mairead Owens (County Librarian, Dun Laoghaire Rathdown) and Dr. Ellen Rowley (Dept. of History of Art and Architecture, TCD) were followed by a panel discussion on the relevance of the library in the Ireland of today and tomorrow.

General Assembly 2015

The 2015 General Assembly was held on 5th March at the Royal Hospital Kilmainham. President Michael D. Higgins was the guest of honour. The text of the President’s speech is available here.

11 new members were elected: composer Elaine Agnew, visual artist John Byrne, architect Tom de Paor, composer Ciarán Farrell, visual artist Marie Hanlon, writer James Harpur, writer Mary Morrissy, writer Michael O’Loughlin, visual artist Geraldine O’Neill, visual artist Joe Walker and writer Enda Wyley.

General Assembly 2014

The 2014 General Assembly was held on Tuesday 29 April at the Royal Hospital Kilmainham. Joe Steve O Neachtain was elected to Aosdana at that meeting.

General Assembly 2013

Because of the unique position of Aosdána internationally, and in the context of the Irish Presidency of the Council of the European Union, Aosdána's 2013 General Assembly included a special afternoon session. Those present were welcomed with a short introduction to Aosdána by Theo Dorgan, which was followed by addresses from Saoithe Anthony Cronin and Seamus Heaney, and presentations on the work of Patrick Scott and Camille Souter.
